NOW CONSERVED—Nearly two square miles of privately owned working forest and wildlife habitat in Fairfield County are now conserved, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Congaree Land Trust (CLT), the South Carolina Conservation Bank (SCCB) and the Springer family. Now under conservation easement, this substantial, natural space will remain intact forever, providing economic viability for the surrounding rural community and preserving the family’s legacy of land stewardship. “We became acquainted with Congaree Land Trust late in Dad’s life. It didn’t take him long to understand how a conservation easement could be a great fit for our family land, and I know my Dad would be pleased today,” says Gary Springer. “Through Congaree Land Trust we’ve been able to ensure that Mariwill Timber Plantation will always be a reflection of Dad’s love for nature and commitment to sustainable use through conservation.” . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #COVIDcantstopgood #therealcolumbia #conservation #conservationmatters #land #southcarolina #fairfieldcounty #rural #landscapes #cleanwater #broadriver #broadriverbasin #wildlifehabitat #cleanair #forestry #naturalresources #landtrust #conservationeasement #landconservation #congaree #landstewardship

A feel good story brought to you by Whatcom Land Trust and @WhatcomTalk! "A four-mile loop through woods, wetlands, beaver ponds, and sandstone ridges, Stimpson Family Nature Reserve off Lake Louise Road is a popular hiking destination vital to the Lake Whatcom watershed. “There are people that go there virtually every day,” says Rand Jack, a founding board member of Whatcom Land Trust. Jack coordinated the land’s donation by the Stimpson family, whose legacy in Bellingham spans three generations." https://www.whatcomtalk.com/2020/03/24/stimpson-nature-reserve-represents-a-family-legacy-of-giving/ #bellingham #bellinghamwa #whatcom #whatcomcounty #landtrust #landtrusts #conservation #LandStewards #LandStewardship #LoveWhereYouLive #EnvironmentalConservation #LandConservation #ConservationLandTrust #Biodiversity #Preservation #LandPreservation #PacificNorthwest #PNW #WashingtonState #UpperLeftUSA #PNWLove

The safety, health, and security of our cattle herd is of the utmost importance to the East Foundation as it is to all cattle producers. This ensures healthy cattle leave the ranch to ultimately become a quality product in grocery stores for consumers throughout the United States and the world. Our entire ranch staff goes through Beef Quality Assurance (BQA) training, a program that instills three key points: 1)Empowering people because producers can positively impact the public image of the cattle industry. 2)Taking responsibility for herd management because it’s our job as land stewards. 3)Working together because product safety and wholesomeness is everyone’s business. Education never stops and the managers and scientists at East Foundation are constantly striving to develop safer and more efficient methods in cattle management and continue to focus on superior care and treatment of all our livestock. #eastfoundation #beefqualityassurance #beefcattle #ranching

It needed doing, so I started. I made a dent and there’s a lot more to go. I did it for the land and the more than human world. I did it for the benefit of others to enjoy the space. And I did it for me, so I wouldn’t feel or think all the nasty things that I do when I see a bunch of litter. Embracing my own power to improve my own life. Self care = All care. This shaggy walnut tree was planted in the Slab Creek Valley over a hundred years ago on property cleared and logged by the Affolter brothers in south Tillamook County so they could have a dairy. They used horses to log and pull stumps. The brothers owned several tracts of land in the valley. On each piece a walnut tree was planted. On the homestead where Walter Affolter was born, Walter showed us an apple tree where he was born and a major walnut tree which overhangs Slab Creek Road which once was old Highway 101. Walter’s parents called their place “Hole in the Woods.” We can find many of the walnut trees in the valley. In the 50 years since we’ve been the stewards of this land, not a single nut has appeared on our walnut tree. In the last 20 years, a Sitka spruce has worked hard to overshadow this extraordinary giant walnut. 7 years ago, Clint Venti (Bro’s & Hoes Landscaping) thinned the spruce to give the walnut some light and breathing room. Major limbs have withered but the tree lives on, giving sustenance to mosses and ferns and more forest life. Yesterday, I discovered that there are 3 spruce trees growing atop its moss swathed upper limbs. One of the young trees is about 5 feet tall. It’s an incredible sight. I’m dazzled by this forest action! 🌲🌿🌲 #sitkaspruce #affolter #southtillamookcounty #holeinthewoods #walnuttree #forestlifestyle #landstewardship

Toshio and I are looking for farmland and it’s really hard out there... limited options with our small amount of money. We have found some ideal properties but can’t afford them or they’re way far from the cities. It’s disheartening, but we will find something. We want to grow healthy food, educate at-risk youth and sustainably care for the land ❤️ gotta focus our energy on what we want and it will come, right? #farmland #lsp #landstewardship #farmers #beginningfarmers #land #minnesota #wisconsin #sustainability #regenerativeagriculture #regenerativefarming #farmsmallfarmsmart #farmtotable #landstewardshipproject #startingout #landaccess

Hi all! Emma here again with my next backyard wildlife sign! I believe these translucent patches are evidence of some type of leaf miner. Leaf miners, of which there are hundreds of known species, are larva that live in between the two epidermal layers of a leaf (that's REALLY small)! The majority of leaf miners are moths or flies. #exploreyourbackyard . . 📸: Emma Tutein | Conservation Field Specialist

Just as a land manager adapts to changing range conditions, our Land Stewardship Ambassador (LSA) program is learning to adapt to new meeting styles and technologies. East Foundation has partnered with the Witte Museum in creating a program that increases awareness of land stewardship principles, promotes civil engagement in today’s youth, and inspires students to obtain careers that support land stewardship. Traditionally our students meet face-to-face but we have switched to Zoom video conferencing. Yesterday, April 5, 2020 our topic of discussion was Diversity in Conservation. LSA participants were joined by Black Outside and Latino Outdoors. Students were tasked to read Black Faces White Spaces by Carolyn Finney and to watch National Geographic J. Drew Lanham’s “Bird-watching while Black: A Wildlife Ecologist shares his tips. The LSA students discussed the importance of reaching diverse audiences to talk about the importance of land stewardship and conservation. #eastfoundation #wittemuseum #LSA #landstewardship

Meet Mr. Saleh Azizi: “In 2013, Saleh Azizi moved to Wai’anae to be inspired by a thriving way of life that still exist in rural Hawai’i’s farming and indigenous families. With a history of being displaced from his home and family as a young boy, Wai’anae was a place of healing for Saleh grounded in principles of Aloha Aina and Pilina. Saleh was hired by @kahumanaorganicfarms in 2017 to start the Kahumana Farm Hub through a @usdagov Specialty Crop Block Grant, managed by the Hawaii Department of Agriculture. The first members joined the hub from weeks of knocking on doors where fruit trees flourished in people’s backyards in Wai’anae. Most of the suppliers of the Kahumana Farm Hub (KFH) say that their fruits used to go to waste because they didn’t produce enough for traditional distributors to acknowledge them. KFH sold 200,000 pounds of fruits and vegetables on behalf of their Wai’anae suppliers during the first 2 years. In 2018 Saleh worked with the Hawaii Farmers Union Foundation for a year as a food hub coordinator and facilitated a food hub network represented by ten food hubs across Hawai’i. He also joined the 2019 @nationalfarmersunion policy committee where he brought forward concerns of Hawaii’s local farmers and food hubs on a national level. In 2019 Saleh completed his doctorate studies at @uhmanoanews UH Manoa Dept of Urban and Regional Planning and with policy recommendations to promote community food security in Hawaii. In his view, food hubs promote a way of life that brings back Hawaii’s legacy of abundance and self-reliance and where all people and households can contribute to a better future together. In the wake of the corona virus, Saleh Azizi and the entire Kahumana Crew led by Farm Director @czuckerman89 Christian Zuckerman took the place of first responders. Kahumana did this by increasing their produce boxes from 10 to approximately 400 per week, operating three farmers markets per week on the farm with strict covid 19 protocols and by contributing to several other large CSA programs on Oahu including @oahufresh Oahu Fresh and @farmlinkhawaii Farmlink Hawaii.” Mahalo nui loa Saleh
